Welcome to the Website of the Study Group „Artificial Insulin Delivery, Pancreas and Islet Transplantation“ (AIDPIT) !

The AIDPIT Study Group has been founded in 1981 and thus represents one of the longest established Study Group of the European Society for the Study of Diabetes (EASD). The members of our group, coming from nearly all European countries have a common goal: Continuous improvement of therapy for diabetes mellitus in oder to allow patients a normal life free of diabetes-related disease.

This is sought through steady research and development of „cutting edge“ novel diabetes therapy options. The AIDPIT Study Group addresses key research areas, that offer the most progress in comparison to current treatment options:

  1. Therapeutic devices, in particular development of insulin delivery systems and glucose-sensors (along with fast- or long-acting insulin or insulin analogues)  and
  2. Biologic therapy, such as replacement of the defunct endogenous pancreatic islet cells by transplantation of vascularized pancreas, isolated islet cells or pancreas regeneration.

The AIDPIT Study Group clearly recognizes the need to explore, advance and integrate both „technology“ and „biology“ for future optimization of diabetes therapy. In addition to have „two legs to stand on“, both fields provide ample knowledge that can be mutually shared, such as physiological glucose sensing, glucose-insulin secretion coupling and feedback regulation. Moreover, the practising diabetologists and clinician scientist require up-to-date information on both forefront therapy areas to have the best available therapeutic choices tailord to the specific needs of their individual patients.

Research exchange is supported by the AIDPIT study group through various means. One main acitivity is the organisation of an annual workshop, traditionally for three days during the last week of January. This workshop offers exellent opportunities for knowledge sharing at the conference, during discussion groups or in personal communication. Particular emphasis is made not only to invite experts in „hot“ research topics, but to bring forward young scientists to present their work and take profit from the experience of senior investigators. Other activities of the Study Group will be highlighted in the website announcements (including the „NEWS“ section) and links to related websites on this page.
