ABOUT AIDPIT - WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT
The AIDPIT Study Group was founded in 1981 and represents one of the longest established study groups of the European Society for the Study of Diabetes (EASD). The members of our group, based throughout Europe, have a common goal - continuous improvement of therapy for diabetes mellitus in order to allow patients a normal life, free of diabetes-related disease.
Through steady research and development of 'cutting edge' novel diabetes therapy options, the AIDPIT study group addresses key research areas that offer the most progress in comparison to current treatment options:
1. Therapeutic devices, in particular development of insulin delivery systems and glucose-sensors (along with fast- or long-acting insulin or insulin analogues)
2. Biologic therapy, such as replacement of the defunct endogenous pancreatic islet cells by transplantation of vascularised pancreas, isolated islet cells or pancreas regeneration.
The AIDPIT Study Group recognises the need to explore, advance and integrate both technology and biology for future optimisation of diabetes therapy. The finding from both fields can be mutually shared, such as physiological glucose sensing, glucose-insulin secretion coupling and feedback regulation. The practising diabetologists and clinician scientists require up-to-date information on both forefront therapy areas to have the best available therapeutic choices tailored to the specific needs of their patients.
The exchange of research findings is strongly encouraged by the AIDPIT study group. We organise a workshop each year, held for three days during the last week of January. Particular emphasis is made not only to invite experts in ‘hot’ research topics, but top encourage young scientists to present their work to the workshop. Other activities of the Study Group will be highlighted in the news section.
František Saudek , M.D.
President of the AIDPIT Study Group
